When you are in an accident, there can be different types of injuries you can incur. While most injuries are traceable and can be treated after the accidents, one injury is tough to identify. Yes, you guessed it correctly. We are talking about Whiplash injuries.

What Are Whiplash Injuries?

Whiplash is a neck injury that is caused by a sudden backward and forward movement of the neck with great force. This kind of injury is quite common in car accidents. A sudden collision makes your upper body move forward, and your seatbelt catches the body movement and retracts your body position.

While it is common in car accidents, that does not mean that other activities cannot incur whiplash injuries. Sports collisions, physical abuse can also cause whiplash injuries and amusement park rides like roller coasters. If the injury is caused due to another person’s negligence, under the personal injury law, you have full right to file a personal injury compensation lawsuit.

If we explain the whiplash injury in more medical terms, it will sound like the extension of soft neck tissue beyond their natural extension limit. You might not recognize this injury right after the event has taken place. It takes time for your body to register this injury and show the symptoms after a few days.

Symptoms Of Whiplash Injury

When you go through the activity, that might accrue a whiplash injury. You would come to know about this injury after a few days with the following symptoms.

  • Restriction in your next movement.
  • Neck pain while moving your neck.
  • Headaches starting at the base of your skull.
  • Numbness in your arm.
  • Fatigue.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Ringing in your years.

Some injuries are exclusive to people and might experience different side effects.

How Do Whiplash Injuries Do Occur?

Whiplash injuries occur when your neck muscles experience a sudden strain because of rapid neck movement. The sudden movement of your neck beyond their natural limits wear and tear the neck ligament and tissues, resulting in whiplash injuries.

Some events that can cause whiplash injuries are as follows:

  • Physical abuse.
  • Car accidents.
  • Cycling accidents.
  • Horseback riding.
  • Falls violently.

All the movement and action that can force your neck to move beyond its natural limits can cause whiplash injuries.

Whiplash injuries are treated similarly to normal injuries. That means, if this injury is caused due to other’s negligence, you can file a lawsuit against them.

For instance, whiplash injury is caused due to a car accident where you are the victim; you have the full right to take help from an accident injury lawyer and file a personal injury claim.

Treatment Of The Whiplash Injury

Although the injury is quite complex to understand, the treatment is pretty much simple compared to that. Doctors often prescribe the patience to go through OTC pain medication. If the injuries are severe, the patients are given pain killers and a neckband to reduce the neck movement.

Medication is only half of the treatment. With medication, physical therapy also plays an important role in fastening the recovery process. Doctors might ask you to put heat and ice on the damaged area to stiffen up your neck and might prescribe some of the simple head movement exercises to maintain the flexibility of the neck.

In some cases, patients are given foam collars to restrict the unnecessary movement of the neck (similar to the plaster that is put on the broken hand).

Complication Associated With Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash injuries bring complications in the patient’s life. Even a simple activity becomes a daunting task. People suffering from whiplash injuries go through chronic pain and headaches for years after the accidents. Doctors can treat the damage and relieve you from pain, but there are hardly any medicines that can cure chronic pain.

However, only a few people carry long-term complications. Fortunately, most of them recover in the first year of the accidents.
